Introduction

At the very root of Japanese culture lies the idea of kami.
From the hunting and gathering societies of the Jömon period, to the agricultural life of the Yayoi, and later to the blending of Shinto and Buddhism with arrival of Buddhist thought, belief has continually transformed - yet its spirit never been broken. Kami reflects the deep connections between nature human life, and even today, it quietly lives on in our daily existence and it hearts. This film traces that long journey, seeking to uncover the essence Japanese culture. And what, we ask, does this ancient and enduring kami speak to Mahito Shinnosuke, a man living toward the future?
Let us search for that answer-together.

Story

A Mahito-a "True Person"-is one who stands in the awai, the liminal space between kami and human beings, serving as a bridge between the two.

I am Sendo Touma, a member of the Mahito lineage. Together with my granddaughter, Mikoto, we came to feel that the time had arrived to pass on the meaning and responsibility of the Mahito to my younger brother, Shinnosuke. To do so, we joined forces with Mikoto's friends- Yoruka, Amehito, and many others-and set out to create the film The Kami of Japanese Culture...

This documentary takes a scientific approach to unraveling the forms of prayer that have continued since the Jōmon period. Over the course of several years, the filmmakers meticulously documented the festivals of Kumano and the worship of megaliths, with a diverse group of experts delving into the essence of Japanese culture. Blending drama, docudrama, and archival footage, this gem of a film poses questions to us—the people living in the future—about our connection to nature and one another.

Yuichi Sugimoto

At the very foundation of Japan’s truly mysterious culture lies the world of the gods,KAMI—a realm that remains invisible even in modern society. This world has its roots in nature-based beliefs dating back to prehistoric times and has been passed down to the present day while being strongly influenced by foreign religions. The appeal of this work lies in the fact that, with this concept as its underlying theme, it brings this world to life on screen through the voices of many narrators.

The World of MAHITO: My Natural History (Original Edition)

In Japan, people began to place strong faith in scientific thinking from the Meiji period onward, as Western rationalism spread rapidly throughout the country.
My natural history does not confine itself to scientific thinking or the natural sciences; it crosses the realms of art, literature, philosophy, history, and economics to contemplate the essence of people and things.
I believe that the true charm of Japan lies in the heart of its people—that is, in its culture.
No matter the ethnicity or nation, the love one feels for one’s homeland, family, and culture is something universal and unchanging.
